The Quicksand

Objects needed:
Stairs, Dad (or parent/adult), blanket

Lesson:
Gather the children at the bottom of the stairs and have them stand on top of a small blanket. Dad/adult wait at the top of the stairs. Say, "Do any of you know what quicksand is?" Give them time to answer. Say, "Yeah, it's very dangerous stuff and the blanket that you are on IS quicksand! Your mission is to get to safety, and the only safe place is at the top of the stairs where some of the dads are. You have to find a way to get up there. There are a couple of rules. First, you can't touch the stairs. Second, you can't touch the stair railing. You have 5 minutes - GO!" Wait until your kids figure out that the only way up is for you to come get them. Let them work it out, but if it looks like they are not catching on, give them a hint until they figure it out. But don't go get them until they ask you to! After all of the children are "safe" at the top of the stairs, set down together and open up the bible to Psalm 40: 1-2.

"I waited patiently for the Lord; He turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand."

Say, "Kids, the reason that we did the quicksand game was so that you would remember something important. There was only one way to get to the top of the stairs, and out of the quicksand, and that was to ask your dad to come down and save you. In the same way, there is only one way for us to be saved and get to heaven. If we want God to save us from our sin, then we need to trust Him as Savior. That is why He sent His son Jesus, to rescue us from our sin, and to bring us safely home to heaven." End with a prayer.

That's easy enough, right?

Don't have stairs? Improvise! And be sure to "try this at home" and let us know how it went! :)

Be blessed today!
